TREEADS
A Holistic Fire management Ecosystem for Prevention, Detection and Restoration of Environmental Disasters
Wildfires are a severe threat across Europe, causing significant environmental and economic damage.
They are becoming more intense and widespread due to climate change, particular forestry practices, ecosystem deterioration, and rural depopulation. Extreme wildfire events, in addition to their devastating ecological impact, have an unparalleled social cost in terms of both human life and economic losses.
TREEADS has established a unified technological ecosystem for integrated fire management and adaptive forest restoration. By adopting a multi-stakeholder, multi-actor approach at its core, the TREEADS solutions contribute to sustainable development as an inclusive societal process and secure sustainability and resilience of natural environment, as well as local human societies.
The TREEADS technologies have been demonstrated in 8 pilot campaigns in Europe and Taiwan. The Norwegian pilot is led by RISE Fire Research. The Norwegian pilot focuses on protection of wildland-urban-interfaces with northern climates and conditions. Innovations include fire resistant wooden façade materials (with Woodify AS and Backegårds List AB) and rubber-based protection of infrastructure (with VIPO AS), logistics optimization for firefighting (with Jotne Connect AS), and seedballs for forest regeneration (with the Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry LAMMC).
As part of the Norwegian pilot in TREEADS, RISE Fire Research has developed the first WUI guideline for Norway, in collaboration with TREEADS partners, stakeholders and the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection DSB). Links to download are given below.
