Fire Protective Textiles
As part of a comprehensive emergency preparedness strategy, the use of fire protective textiles can help minimise damage from fire and water to irreplaceable objects and interiors in historic buildings.
In 2021-2024, NIKU led the work of testing various types of fire protective textiles. Trials were carried out at three fire stations, where handling properties, as well as protection against heat and water were tested.
Collaboration partners were Kirkenes Employers' Organisation (KA), Østre Agder Fire and Rescue, Oslo Fire and Rescue, Bergen Fire Department, RISE Fire Research, The Directorate for Cultural Heritage and The Swedish National Heritage Board. The report from this work can be found in Brage.
The project was continued in 2023 with a laboratory study of the textiles' resistance to fire and water stress. This was carried out at RISE Fire Research and the report from the tests can be found here.
As an extension of this work, NIKU and KA have also developed a guide for owners and managers who are embarking on a salvage priority plan.
